Switching from department-store beauty and skincare can be a costly (and overwhelming)
exercise - especially if you've built up quite a collection of products over time. If you've recently made the decision to clean-up your beauty ritual for safer, healthier, cosmetics and skincare, I've got a few tips below to make the process smoother.
Firstly, I don't believe in going cold-turkey on anything. Habits are formed gradually - and they should be changed in the same way.
Start by getting out your make-up bag and lay out all of your products. Check expiration dates, and toss anything that has expired (this is something you should do regularly, anyway). Assess what needs replacing now, either from expiration or having been finished, and create a list of those items.
Whenever one of my readers emails me wanting tips on how to make the switch - my response is just replace each item as it is finished/expires - it makes it much easier on your purse, and also saves you from feeling like you've wasted product. Tip: If you're in the US, I know that department and beauty stores such as Nordstrom, Sephora etc will refund beauty products that have 50% or more of the product remaining - regardless of a receipt. Perhaps check with the retailer you initially purchased from prior to tossing anything!
Once you've figured out what you do need to replace, the fun begins!
To make things simple, choose a retailer that you can trust (i.e. all of the brands they carry are carefully curated and as clean as they come), and has a wide range of brands and products, along with a sample program. Some of my favourites are:
As most organic, natural and "green" beauty brands aren't available from department stores for you to walk in and swatch, sample programs are a brilliant way to test out new shades, finishes and formulas without splurging on something full-price. Most samples are enough for 2-3 uses, and are great for colour-matching foundation and finding a finish that is right for you.
Another tip I have is find an organic beauty blogger (or five!) that clicks with you, and follow them. Bloggers try so many different brands and products, and only bring the best to you. They can help you discover new brands, and will answer any question you have. Bonus - those in the green/organic beauty community are all so lovely and supportive, their followers will often answer questions for you, and you may even make some new friends, too!
I hope these tips help you on your way, and don't forget, you can always, always contact your favourite blogger or shop for help or information regarding anything!
